Kodet was commissioned by Minneapolis Public Schools to design a new building for Burroughs Community School at its current site. The school had suffered due to numerous additions over the years, many of which were only supposed to be temporary. Neither the original part of the building, built in 1926, nor the later additions meet the needs of today’s technologies or programs. Because the expense of rehabilitating the building would be extensive, it was determined to be more cost effective to replace the school.

Unlike many of the recent schools built in Minneapolis, a staff, parents and a student body was already in place at this facility. Therefore, their input, and that of the adjacent park staff was critical to locating the building on the site.

Kodet plans to reuse many of the historic details from the original building in the new design. A mural designed by students with the help of a local artist will be reconstructed and accented in the new building. Other elements will also be incorporated as the design develops.
